The locally produced film Breaking Balls is a 75-minute documentary that follows three colorful figures involved in the game of bocce as viewed through the lens of the 30th Anniversary Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce tournament. The Challenge Cup is one of the largest bocce events in North America, and is held every year at the Wickliffe Italian-American Club in Wickliffe, Ohio, the last weekend of August.  The film has screened at the Cleveland International Film Festival and the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival.

PRODUCER/DIRECTOR BIO:
John Vourlis has 25+ years’ experience working in the entertainment industry and is currently an Adjunct Instructor in Film and Digital Media at Cleveland State University. John has been writing screenplays for 20 years. He has written a screenplay and various treatments for Academy Award nominated actor James Cromwell’s production company, Koshari Films; nine scripts for the children’s educational DVD series Rainbow Valley Heroes, and the text for several video games for Acclaim Entertainment. He was also a semi-finalist for the prestigious Nicholl’s Fellowship in screenwriting in 1998. John has also published several short stories and is the writer of a new comic book series, Time Spanners, as well as the author of a well-reviewed travel memoir about Nepal entitled Yoga For Freedom.

John directed the short film Rocket from the Grave and was nominated for best director for his work on it at the 2013 Ohio Independent Film Festival. Breaking Balls is his first feature length film. John has an M.F.A. in Film Production from the highly acclaimed USC School of Cinematic Arts, as well as an M.A. in English and a B.S. in Engineering from Case Western Reserve University. He worked in Space Propulsion Technology at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland before embarking on his career in film.
